Not of this World #2 Tor Johnson- Super Swedish Angel/Monster
Not of this World #2 Tor Johnson Super Swedish Angel/Monster For most of us, our first exposure to Tor Johnson was between the pages of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. If you are of a certain age and bent, then Famous Monsters joined Mad magazine as your childhood's Old and New Testament. Tor appeared in those magic pages many times in all his bald, white-eyed monster glory. But where does a monster come from? I assumed Tor was created in a make-up room by Jack Pierce o

Basket Case 3 at 30!: Director Frank Henenlotter
Frank Henenlotter needs no introduction here at ICFH. In a ten-year span from 1982 to 1992 he delivered some of the finest exploitation movies being made at the time, including the Basket Case trilogy, Brain Damage and Frankenhooker. He was integral to rescuing hundreds upon hundreds of abandoned films and getting them released through Something Weird Video and returned to filmmaking with the excellent Bad Biology in 2008. His output in the last ten years has concentrated on

The Shocking True Story of the Mondo Movement!
Mondo Cane George Seminara I only watched this film once at a midnight screening in High School. I hope never to see it again. But, it earned my respect and showed me that there is a reason the news tries not to show these images. When something goes beyond our ability to reason, we instinctually want to fictionalize it. It didn't happen. We feel that it's like any movie. We can't grasp something so shocking. Our feelings get in the way of truth and it messes us up! These fee

Mildred Kornman July 10, 1925 – August 20, 2022
Bad news on a Lazy Sunday. James L Neibaur alerted me to the passing of Mildred Kornman, the formerly oldest living member of the, Our Gang films and quite possibly the last living actor to appear in a role in silent movies. Mildred was 97, born July 10, 1925). Mildred was the sister of Mary Kornman, who was basically, the Darla Hood of the early Our Gang Comedies, appearing in at least forty shorts! She died in Colorado fifty years ago of cancer. But back to Mildred, who att

Basket Case 3 at 30!: Kevin Van Hentenryck
Welcome back to the ICFH Archives as I continue my look at Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case 3 with some of the people who made the film. At the time I conducted these interviews in late 2012, at the film’s 20th anniversary, I made every effort to track down the original Belial Bradley himself to get his thoughts. Frank Henenlotter told me Belial had retired from film and gone into seclusion at the end of the 90’s and even he had no idea where he was. Luckily, I was able to tra

Gualtiero Jacopetti and Mondo Cane
Gualtiero Jacopetti (4 September 1919 – 17 August 2011), co-creator, with his directing partner Franco Prosperi, created what we now call the Shock-u-mentary. Their film Mondo Cane - literally translates as Dog World, but I guess they meant it to read A Dogs Life. My Italian ain't great, Capisce? Mondo Cane is not for the faint-hearted. It starts with some man on dog brutality. It continues to show one horror after another. Mondo Cane was very controversial in its day. In tru

Anne Heche- "...tell the truth. Nothing else is worth anything."
As representatives of the actress announced that she had suffered an irrevocable brain injury, ICFH looks at the actress's work and controversial professional life. Note: As of this blog posting, actress Anne Heche was still alive. Her reps had just announced they did not expect her to survive the car crash she was involved with on Friday, August 5, 2022. They stated that "It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she is being kept on life support to determine if a

Basket Case 3 at 30!: Beverly Bonner
Last week we went into the archives and blew the dust off my email exchange with Basket Case 3 scriptwriter Robert Martin. This week we revisit my phone chat with actor Beverly Bonner about her involvement with Basket Case 3. Bonner made an appearance in six of Frank Henenlotter’s films. In addition to the Basket Case trilogy, she also showed up in Brain Damage (1986), Frankenhooker (1990) and Bad Biology (2008). (She later resurrected her Casey character for the stage so fan

The Last Laugh (1924)
The Last Laugh Directed by F.W. Murnau George Seminara "Here our story should really end, for in actual life, the forlorn old man would have little to look forward to but death." In 1924 German Director F.W. Murnau released his film, Der Letzte Mann, which translates into English as The Last Man. By the time it reached the United States, it would be entitled the Last Laugh for reasons that will become apparent. Read on! After the relative success of Nosferatu, F.W. Murnau was

Basket Case 3 at 30!: Screenwriter Robert Martin
Basket Case 3 at 30! In 2012 I revisited Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case 3 (1992). From the first time I saw it, I thought there was a lot to like about this wacky flick. Also, living down south, I thought it was charming that Frank traded his regular environs of New York for Georgia. (And I know IMDb lists the film as a 1991 production. It screened in October of ‘91 at the MIFED Film Festival in Italy, but I had to wait until it’s 1992 release on VHS to catch up with it, so

Roscoe Lee Brown May 2, 1922 – April 11, 2007
Roscoe Lee Brown May 2, 1922 – April 11, 2007 Dignity, always dignity. Roscoe Lee Browne. Actor, Director, and 2-time Emmy Winner. Shakespearean exemplar. I first met this gentleman when I was a teenager. I used to mop and clean Phoebe's Restaurant in the early morning before High School. Under a table, I found his wallet. It was 5:30am, I thought, he's an actor, of course, he was awake! (In my experience, actors only sleep when they cannot get into any more mischief) I calle
